Deepest Dish Apple Pie

Amanda digs into Deepest Dish Apple Pie

The filling is the best- right?  This is the filling of at least 2 pies with just a top crust.  Refer to Moms Pie Crust for your top or buy a store made one.  The rest you just peel, slice and mix.

I use a good 12 apples.  Pick a firm and tart apple for the best pie filling.  I like Granny’s but there are others just as tasty.  Peel the apples, core the apples and slice each apple into 8 slices.  Place in large bowl and add 1/2 cup white flour, 1 cup of sugar (raw, brown or white), 1 tablespoon lemon juice, 2 tablespoons of butter in small chunks, 1 tablespoon of cinnamon, 1/2 tsp. of nutmeg, a shake or two of ground cloves.  Mix well and put in a deep buttered casserole dish.  Place your homemade or store bought crust on top, crimp to the edges, make a few deep slashes and you are ready to bake.  You can sprinkle a little sugar on top before you bake if you like.  Bake in pre-heated 450 oven for 15 minutes, then reduce heat to 350 degrees and bake an additional 45 minutes to an hour.  The apple filling should be bubbling out the top.  Be sure to put a foil lined cookie sheet UNDER your pie as you bake it or be ready for some serious oven cleaning.
